Transport for NSW is investigating options to improve traffic flow, safety and accessibility on Hillsborough Road, Warners Bay to the Newcastle Inner City Bypass. Road safety and traffic efficiency are the key concerns to be addressed by the proposal. We are planning for future improvements along Hillsborough Road, including developing options for upgrading a number of key intersections along the corridor and providing additional lanes to address capacity issues, safety concerns and continuing traffic growth.
Early work on Hillsborough Road, Warners Bay
Transport for NSW completed work to improve traffic flow and pedestrian connections on Hillsborough Road at Warners Bay in early April 2017. The work improved access for motorists turning left on to Hillsborough Road from the southern service road, 500 metres east of the Hillsborough Road roundabout at Warners Bay. The work involved road widening and line marking on the access road. Pedestrian connection improvements were also carried out to install concrete footpaths and pads to improve pedestrian safety between the bus stops and traffic lights
We also completed the installation of mid-block traffic lights on Hillsborough Road, Warners Bay, east of the Macquarie Road roundabout in November 2017.
Stage 1 - Newcastle Inner City Bypass and Hillsborough Road interchange
Stage 1 traffic flow improvements on the Newcastle Inner City Bypass were completed in January 2020. The work included installing traffic lights and traffic queue detectors at the Newcastle Inner City Bypass. Transport for NSW is continuing to monitor the effectiveness of the traffic lights and queue detectors.
Transport for NSW is continuing to carry out routine investigations as part of early planning for the Chadwick Street and Hillsborough Road intersection upgrade at Hillsborough. This includes discussions with potentially affected businesses, community organisations, Aboriginal Groups, Lake Macquarie Council and other Government agencies about the project.
The Chadwick Street and Hillsborough Road intersection upgrade as well as the remainder of the proposed projects on Hillsborough Road - Warners Bay to the Newcastle Inner City Bypass will be subject to final business case and funding approval.
We will continue to keep stakeholders and the community informed about Hillsborough Road as planning progresses.
