Work to establish the site compound at the northern end of the bridge will start on Monday 25 May.
We will be working between 6am and 4pm from Monday to Thursday and expect to complete the work in seven months, weather permitting.
Temporary lane closures and a 40km/h speed limit will be in place during work hours and may affect travel times.
Work will also be undertaken from a barge under the bridge with part of the river closed to marine traffic and a 4 knot speed restriction in place.
The bridge will be closed for a single night later in the project, with detours in place. This is likely to occur in June and we will provide you with more information prior to this night work and bridge closure occurring.
Morpeth Bridge is a timber truss bridge that spans the Hunter River at Morpeth. The bridge is listed on the state heritage register and is assessed as being nationally significant, primarily on the basis of its technical and historical characteristics. The bridge is one of 26 bridges identified for conservation in the Roads and Maritime Timber Truss Bridge Conservation Strategy, which was developed in consultation with the Heritage Council.
The maintenance work involves replacement of timber truss elements and repainting the bridge.
Regular updates about the project, including confirmed bridge closure dates and detour routes, will be provided to the local community as the project progresses.
