19 MAY 2019Night work

From Wednesday 3 July, Roads and Maritime Services will continue night work as part of the project to upgrade the intersection of Illawarra Highway and Sheepwash Road.

The NSW Government has provided $2.4 million for the intersection upgrade for improved road and motorist safety.

As part of the safety improvement upgrades at this intersection, asphalting work will be carried out from Wednesday 3, Thursday 4 and Sunday 7 July between 7pm and 5am, weather permitting.

This will allow work to continue to complete line marking and finalise the roundabout at the intersection and to improve motorist safety.

Traffic control, lighting and noise, lane closures and a reduced speed limit of 40 km/h will be in place for the safety of workers and motorists during work hours. The 80 km/h speed zone at this location will be in place.

Motorists should be aware of the changed traffic conditions, and follow the directions of road side electronic message boards and traffic control.

We expect to complete the project by mid-2019, weather permitting. Roads and Maritime thanks the community for their patience during this important work.

Project information

Roads and Maritime Services investigated safety improvements at this intersection due to the high number of crashes.

The intersection is used by about 5000 vehicles each day (about 10 per cent heavy vehicles).
A roundabout was determined to be the best solution at this location as it will improve safety for road users at the intersection while maintaining traffic flow.

The installation of the roundabout involves resurfacing the road and construction of the roundabout, including line marking, signage and street lighting.

The improvements at this location include:

  • road widening
  • new line marking and signage
  • installation of medians, centre island and traffic islands
  • landscaping
  • removal and adjustment of existing street lighting
  • installation of a roundabout

The new roundabout will:

  • reduce the risk for road crashes
  • minimise the severity of road crashes
  • improve driver awareness
