Updates and announcements

From Sunday 19 May, Roads and Maritime Services will continue night work as part of the project to install a roundabout at the intersection of Illawarra Highway and Sheepwash Road. The NSW Government has provided $2.4 million for the upgrade to the intersection to improve road safety.

A temporary roundabout will be in place from Sunday 19 May and will allow work for the final roundabout to continue, which will include widening the road, new line marking, signage, installation of medians, a centre island, traffic islands and improved lighting.

Work will be carried out at night for three weeks until Thursday 6 June, weather permitting. Our work hours will be between 7pm and 5am from Sunday to Thursday. Lane closures, traffic control and a reduced speed limit of 40 km/h will be in place for the safety of workers and motorists.

Motorists should be aware of the changed traffic conditions, and follow the directions of road side electronic message boards and traffic control.

We expect to complete the project by mid-2019, weather permitting. Roads and Maritime thanks the community for their patience during this important work.

Project background

Roads and Maritime Services investigated safety improvements at this intersection due to the high number of crashes.

The intersection is used by about 5000 vehicles each day (about 10 per cent heavy vehicles).
A roundabout was determined to be the best solution at this location as it will improve safety for road users at the intersection while maintaining traffic flow.

The installation of the roundabout involves resurfacing the road and construction of the roundabout, including line marking, signage and street lighting.
