Project information

The NSW Government is investing $275 million to improve safety and travel times on Nelson Bay Road including duplicating the road from Williamtown to Bobs Farm and early work to upgrade the Nelson Bay Road and Lemon Tree Passage Road intersection and the Nelson Bay Road and Medowie Road intersection. The upgrade of the Nelson Bay Road and Medowie Road intersection was completed in June 2019. Work on the Nelson Bay Road and Lemon Tree Passage Road intersections started in February 2020 and is expected to be completed in four months, weather permitting.

Transport for NSW sought comments from the community and stakeholders on the proposed route options for the Nelson Bay Road – Williamtown to Bobs Farm upgrade in September 2019. We would like to thank everyone who took the time to consider our proposal and provide feedback.

Following a review of the comments, we have decided to investigate alternative route options for the project that were suggested by the community and stakeholders during the consultation period. We are planning to further consult with the community about the alternative route options in late 2020.

We are also carrying out preliminary planning and investigation work on the project. Investigation work includes site investigations by environmental and Aboriginal heritage specialists.

We will also be monitoring traffic movements and surveying the road corridor, property boundaries, driveways and footpaths. This preliminary planning and investigation work will be ongoing over the coming months.

The Williamtown to Bobs Farm upgrade involves two sections:

  • Williamtown to Salt Ash
  • Salt Ash to Bobs Farm

The key features are:

  • two lanes in each direction
  • improved intersection access
  • improved shoulders for cyclist
  • minimum 80km/h design.

Two primary route alignment options are being considered for both sections of the project.

The potential route alignments that are being considered are shown on the map below.

We are planning to further consult with the community about the alternative route options in late 2020.

We will continue to keep stakeholders and the community informed as planning progresses.
