The upgrades will involve the delivery of 2 overtaking lanes, one northbound and one southbound, north of Dubbo.

Project information

Initial work on these overtaking lanes started in May 2019 and included establishing the site compound, installing fencing, removing trees, and erosion and sediment control.

Work on the Marthaguy overtaking lanes will take about nine months to complete.

Roads and Maritime Services selected BMD and AECOM as strategic partners in the Newell Highway Program Alliance.

The partnership will deliver at least 30 additional overtaking lanes in an estimated four years rather than the likely eight years it would take to fund and deliver this work using traditional procurement methods.

This innovative mode of delivery will result in a minimum of 45 kilometres of new overtaking lanes to improve safety, reduce travel times, allow more accurate travel planning and improve freight productivity.

The new overtaking lanes are expected to provide around 25 minutes of travel time savings along the length of the Newell Highway from the Victorian border to the Queensland border.

As part of this program, work on the first overtaking lanes at Marthaguy started in May 2019.

The new upgrade will involve the delivery of 2 overtaking lanes, one northbound and one southbound, north of Dubbo.

The benefits of the project include:

  • Improved safety for motorists and road users
  • Reduced travel times
  • More accurate travel planning
  • Improved freight efficiency

Motorists and road users are encouraged to drive to the conditions and follow the direction of traffic control and all signs, including a reduced speed limit of 40km/h during work hours.

The project team will keep the community regularly informed as the work progresses.

Thank you for your understanding while we complete this important work.
