The upgrade will involve the delivery of one overtaking lane southbound through Medway Creek, Brocklehurst, north of Dubbo.

Project information

Initial work on this overtaking lane started on Monday 8 July and includes establishing the site compound, removing trees, and erosion and sediment control.

Work on the Medway Creek overtaking lane will take about seven months to complete.

Roads and Maritime Services have selected BMD and AECOM as strategic partners in the Newell Highway Program Alliance.

The partnership will deliver at least 30 additional overtaking lanes in an estimated four years rather than the likely eight years it would take to fund and deliver this work using traditional procurement methods.

This innovative mode of delivery will result in a minimum of 45 kilometres of new overtaking lanes to improve safety, reduce travel times, allow more accurate travel planning and improve freight productivity.

The new overtaking lanes are expected to provide around 25 minutes of travel time savings along the length of the Newell Highway from the Victorian border to the Queensland border.

Work on a southbound overtaking lane on the Newell Highway through Medway Creek in Brocklehurst started on Monday 8 July.

The overtaking lane will extend for approximately 2 kilometres along the highway southbound, starting from Medway Road and finishing approximately 600 metres south of Broadacre Road.

Initial work will include establishing the site compound, removing trees, and erosion and sediment control. We are currently exploring options for the use of grey water during site preparation and road construction, including settling dust.

We are also investigating the most appropriate measures to accommodate a threatened bird, the grey crowned babbler, which our team observed in the area. This could include the use of nest boxes in surrounding trees.

The benefits of the project include:

  • Improved safety for motorists and road users
  • Reduced travel times
  • More accurate travel planning
  • Improved freight efficiency

There will also be some temporary traffic changes to ensure the work zone is safe. This includes lane closures for aspects of the works. During work, road users are encouraged to drive to the conditions, and follow the direction of traffic control and all signs. A reduced speed limit will apply 24 hours a day, and will vary from 40km/h to 80km/h.

The project team will keep the community regularly informed as the work progresses.

Thank you for your understanding while we complete this important work.
