Project information

Bourke Street is a busy pedestrian route used by a high volume of people accessing North Wollongong train station, North Wollongong beach and the numerous bars, restaurants and recreational facilities in the area.

The NSW Government has allocated $100,000 to investigate pedestrian safety improvements at the intersection of Bourke Street, Keira Street and Virginia Street, North Wollongong.

Roads and Maritime Services is proposing to install traffic lights to provide signalised pedestrian crossings on all four legs of the intersection.

Roads and Maritime Services invited feedback on the proposal to install traffic lights at this intersection in June and July. Please view or download the proposed concept design.

A total of 143 responses were received, with 119 responses from residents who live within 500 metres of the intersection.

Feedback included the following topics:

  • Support for the proposal:
    • Improved pedestrian access and mobility
    • Improved safety for vehicles turning at the intersection
    • Potential to improve the traffic flow along Bourke Street
  • Safety and congestion issues if vehicles were banned from turning right into Keira and Virginia streets from Bourke Street
  • Congestion on Bourke Street as a result of new traffic lights
  • Desire to see the speed limit on Bourke Street reduced to improve safety
  • Request for the adjoining footpaths to be upgraded, or construct new footpaths where there currently are none
  • Impacts to on-street parking
  • Request to consider alternative options such as a roundabout or improve the existing pedestrian refuges
  • Increase in noise and pollution
  • Difficulty entering and exiting driveways near the intersection might be increased
  • Vehicles driving at high speeds on nearby local roads.

The community will be kept informed as the project to improve pedestrian safety at the intersection progresses.
