The NSW Government is upgrading the roads around the Northern Beaches Hospital and improving capacity along Warringah Road. The hospital is located close to Warringah Road, Forest Way and Wakehurst Parkway, which are major arterial roads serving Sydney’s northern suburbs. Together these arterials currently carry about 140,000 vehicles per day.
When complete, the upgrade will provide a better travel experience and increase traffic capacity around the hospital precinct as well as on the major arterial roads in the area to cater for the anticipated population growth and traffic volumes following the opening of the hospital. This will result in more reliable journey times, improved flow for through traffic and safer access to cyclists and pedestrians.
There will be temporary traffic changes so we can progress the upgrade of Warringah Road at Frenchs Forest. We will continue to keep the community informed and monitor traffic alongside the Transport Management Centre to ensure we provide a safe environment for residents, commuters, pedestrians and cyclists travelling through the project area as well as for those working on the project.
Please view the animated video to see how it will look once complete.
Ferrovial York Joint Venture (FYJV) has been engaged by Roads and Maritime to deliver the project. The project is currently on track for completion in mid-2020.
The Northern Beaches Hospital Connectivity and Network Enhancement (CaNE) project is made up of two stages:
The project reached peak activity in the middle of 2018 in the lead up to the hospital opening. Major road construction was underway for the widening of Warringah Road and to ensure the completion of Stage 1. The excavation and construction of the 1.3 kilometre long underpass in the centre of Warringah Road continues to make progress, with more than 100,000 cubic metres of soil, rock and other materials removed so far.
The main milestones road users and residents can expect to see early in the year include:
- completion of the Forest Way road upgrade including the extension of the southbound bus bay
- construction of the centre medians and traffic islands at Forest Way and Wakehurst Parkway intersections
- laying the final asphalt layer for surface roads in the project area
- continued construction of the Warringah Road underpass
Changed traffic conditions and delays will continue with our work on Stage 2 and we appreciate the support of residents and road users during this period. We encourage residents and motorists to use alternative routes during construction, avoid the area during peak periods if possible, allow extra travel time and plan their journey ahead.
