About this project

Project information

The NSW Government is upgrading the roads around the new Northern Beaches Hospital and improving capacity along Warringah Road. The hospital is located close to Warringah Road, Forest Way and Wakehurst Parkway, which are major arterial roads serving Sydney’s northern suburbs. Together these arterials currently carry about 140,000 vehicles per day.

When complete, the upgrade will provide a better travel experience and increase traffic capacity around the hospital precinct as well as on the major arterial roads in the area to cater for the anticipated population growth and traffic volumes following the opening of the hospital. This will result in more reliable journey times, improved flow for through traffic and safer access to cyclists and pedestrians.

Ferrovial York Joint Venture (FYJV) has been engaged by Roads and Maritime to deliver the project.

The Northern Beaches Hospital Connectivity and Network Enhancement (CaNE) project is made up of two stages:

The project reached peak activity in the middle of 2018 in the lead up to the hospital opening. Major road construction was underway for the widening of Warringah Road and to ensure the completion of Stage 1.  The excavation and construction of the 1.3 kilometre long underpass as part of Stage 2 continues to make progress, marked by the opening of the bridge across Hilmer Street.

The main milestones road users and residents can expect to see throughout the year include:

  • opening of Aquatic Drive allowing motorists to turn left in, left out and right in from Wakehurst Parkway
  • opening of the Forest Way and Wakehurst Parkway underpass bridges to traffic
  • completion of the Forest Way road upgrade
  • excavation and construction of the Warringah Road underpass

Changed traffic conditions and delays will continue with our work on Stage 2 and we appreciate the support of residents and road users during this period. We encourage residents and motorists to use alternative routes during construction, avoid the area during peak periods if possible, allow extra travel time and plan their journey ahead.

For more information please view the traffic and commuters or the work in your area webpage.
