Work is progressing on the Pacific Highway duplication at Lisarow

Pacific Highway duplication at Lisarow

The NSW Government is investing $178 million to upgrade the Pacific Highway between Ourimbah Street and Parsons Road at Lisarow.

The upgrade will improve traffic flow, travel times and safety for around 30,000 motorists using this 1.6 kilometre section of the highway each day.

A key feature of the upgrade will be a new rail bridge across the main Sydney to Newcastle rail line.

MAR 2021Girders to be installed on new rail over bridge

Work will be carried out continuously from 5am on Saturday 13, Sunday 14 March and up to 10pm on Monday 15 March during the scheduled rail shutdown, weather permitting.

We will be working to install bridge girders for the new rail bridge near the Pacific Highway and Railway Crescent.

Girders will be loaded at the northern compound on the Pacific Highway using a crane and transported along the highway on oversized trucks to the local of the new bridge, where they will be installed using a 600 tonne crane.

Lane closures and traffic control will be in place during the work and may affect travel times by up to five minutes. Motorists are advised to allow extra travel time or use alternate routes.

Night work will be carried out between 6pm and 7am from Sunday to Thursday nights until 31 March, weather permitting.

Night work will include:

  • asphalting for the new section of the Pacific Highway where it joins the existing highway near Lisarow Station and south of Tuggerah Street, and near Parsons Road and The Ridgeway
  • commissioning of utility services on the Pacfic Highway in front of Lisarow Cemertery and on Railway Crescent
  • accessing site compounds on Railway Crescent, Macdonalds Road and the northern compounds on the Pacific Highway.

Day work continues on the project between 7am and 6pm on weekdays and 8am and 1pm on Saturdays.

Lane closures and traffic control will be in place during work hours, while a permanent 40 km/h reduced speed limit remains through the work zone for the safety of motorists and workers.

Project information

The NSW Government is investing $178 million to upgrade the Pacific Highway between Ourimbah Street and Parsons Road at Lisarow.

Following consideration of community feedback in 2016, the Review of Environmental Factors was determined in February 2017.

As a result of our continued planning and development of the project, Roads and Maritime Services has updated the Review of Environmental Factors to include more details in two Addendum Review of Environmental Factors reports.

A contract was awarded to Daracon Contractors in November 2018 to build the upgrade.

Key benefits of the upgrade include:

  • Improved traffic flow and travel times on the Pacific Highway
  • Improved connections to the local road network
  • Improved safety for all road users
  • Improved pedestrian and cycle network.
  • Two lanes in each direction on the Pacific Highway
  • A new bridge over the rail line, replacing the existing narrow bridge near Railway Crescent
  • New traffic lights at the Railway Crescent and Tuggerah Street (formerly Macdonalds Road) intersections with the Pacific Highway
  • Upgrading the existing traffic lights at The Ridgeway
  • Improved pedestrian and cycle paths along and across the highway
  • Improved access to the parking area at Lisarow Railway Station.

Standard work hours will be from 7am to 6pm, Monday to Friday and from 8am to 1pm on Saturdays. We will be required to work outside of normal working hours at times, including at night from 7pm to 5am.

The ability to work on the new four-lane bridge over the rail line is limited when scheduled train services are running. During scheduled rail line trackwork shutdowns, we may work continually throughout the day and night to reduce the overall duration of construction.

Major work started in February 2019.

We will continue to keep stakeholders and the community informed as the project progresses.
