Construction work for the new pedestrian bridge was carried out from July 2017 to April 2018. Work completed includes building foundations, moving and protecting the heritage pillars, building the stairs and lift shafts, lifting the bridge span into place and landscaping.

The pedestrian bridge was lifted into place on Saturday 20 January and opened to foot traffic on Monday 29 January 2018, to coincide with the commencement of the school year.

Roads and Maritime would like to thank the community for their patience while we delivered this important project.

Project information

The NSW Government committed $5 million to build a pedestrian bridge on Pennant Hills Road, North Parramatta near Masons Drive, to provide a safe crossing for local students, parents, carers and other pedestrians and cyclists.

  • 9.2 metres high
  • allows a clearance for heavy vehicles up to about 5.5 metres
  • the newly installed stairs and lift increases accessibility for all community members.

The key benefits to the community include:

  • improving safety, by separating pedestrians from a busy main road and providing a safe crossing of Pennant Hills Road for local students, parents, carers and other pedestrians and cyclists
  • providing a safer accessible crossing for people with limited mobility, prams and bicycles.

Roads and Maritime Services invited feedback in March and April 2016 on the proposal to build a pedestrian bridge on Pennant Hills Road, North Parramatta near Masons Drive.

We received feedback from 45 people, with the majority in favour of the proposal. There were 24 people in support of the pedestrian bridge, 15 people opposed the proposal and six people did not state a preference.

After considering all responses, along with the proposal’s aims and design requirements, Roads and Maritime decided to proceed with the project having modified the bridge colour to highlight the main arch structure.

Roads and Maritime would like to thank everyone who took the time to provide feedback throughout this project.

The NSW Government’s Active Transport Pedestrian Bridges Program aims to provide safer pedestrian crossings and improves access to all users.
