The NSW Government is funding a number of projects in the Richmond area and surrounds, with the aim to reduce traffic delays, manage congestion and improve travel times across roads in Richmond.

The Richmond area and surrounds are located in the Hawkesbury City and Penrith City Council areas, part of the Hawkesbury electorate, about 65km to the north-west of Sydney. Located at the eastern end of the Bells Line of Road corridor, Richmond Bridge crosses the Hawkesbury River connecting Bells Line of Road in the west to Kurrajong Road in the east.
Roads in the Richmond area provide a strategic east-west regional link supporting Great Western Highway in carrying commuter traffic, and acts as an alternative route. Richmond also has high tourism significance with botanical gardens, bushwalking trails, lookout points and one of the most picturesque routes crossing the Blue Mountains.
