Project information
Roads and Maritime is investing approximately $30 million to upgrade Stacey Street and Fairford Road in Bankstown. Our improvements will add additional lanes in both directions as well as provide improvements to two key intersections.
These upgrades will improve traffic flow and journey reliability to better connect motorists to southern Sydney, the Sydney CBD and Sydney’s west. When work is complete people will spend less time in traffic and more time with their family and friends.
- Reduced congestion on one of Sydney’s key arterial roads by providing additional north and south bound lanes on Stacey Street, increasing space on the road to allow more motorists to use the corridor.
- Enabling easier access into and out of Macauley Avenue for road users by providing dual right turning lanes onto Stacey Street, and extending the right turn bay on Stacey Street for motorist turning into Macauley Avenue.
- Improved traffic flow into Stanley Street from Stacey Street by allowing more vehicles to queue in the extended right turning bay.
- Improved safety for pedestrians when crossing Salvia Avenue with the installation of a new pedestrian crossing lights and pram facilities
- Improving travel time, journey reliability, and safety for all road users.
We have completed the first stage of road widening on Stacey Street by providing an additional lane for southbound motorists between Macauley Avenue and Stanley Street. We have also extended the existing dual right turn bay on Stacey Street for road users turning right into Macauley Avenue.
Roads and Maritime Services would like to thank local residents for their patience.
These upgrades will reduce congestion, provide more reliable journey times and improved safety for all road users, particularly motorists travelling to southern Sydney or Sydney’s west.
The completed work includes:
- installing an additional lane on Stacey Street southbound, between Salvia and Daphne avenues
- extending the right turn bay on Stacey Street for motorists turning right into Macauley Avenue
- replacing kerbs, guttering and storm water drainage on Stacey Street southbound, between Salvia and Daphne avenues
- upgrading existing street lighting on Stacey Street; southbound between Salvia and Daphne avenues, and northbound between Macauley Avenue and Stanley Street
- providing new guard rails on Stacey Street southbound, between Salvia and Daphne avenues.
Work on the second stage of upgrades to Stacey Street and Fairford Road is starting 25 November 2019.
You spoke. We listened. We’ve made changes to accelerate work on this project and protect community open space.
After considering comments from the community and key stakeholders about the loss of open space and the removal of trees at Stevens Reserve, we have decided not to proceed with the proposed road widening on Stanley Street, Bankstown.
This means we won’t create an additional right turning lane on Stanley Street, however we will now move the delivery of all other improvements into the second stage of construction, providing more immediate congestion and safety benefits for local residents.
We have also amended our design to relocate the pedestrian crossing at the intersection of Stacey Street, Macauley Avenue and Fairford Road from the southern leg of the intersection to the northern side. This will prioritise the safety of pedestrians, ensuring they can cross the road without needing to wait at the crossing island.
Work happening in stage two includes:
- building an additional northbound lane on Stacey Street, between Macauley Avenue and Stanley Street
- providing new guard rails on Stacey Street northbound, between Macauley Avenue and Stanley Street
- changing Macauley Avenue to have dual right turning lanes onto Fairford Street as well as a dedicated bus right turn lane
- installing a new lane on Fairford Road which when complete will have three northbound lanes and a dedicated left turn lane at the intersection of Macauley Avenue
- moving the pedestrian crossing across Stacey Street to the other side of Macauley Avenue to improve pedestrian safety and traffic flow
- installing new pedestrian crossing lights at Salvia Avenue, near Stacey Street
- extending the right turn bay on Stacey Street so more motorist can queue to safely turn right into Stanley Street
- removing the permanently closed footbridge over the storm water culvert on Stacey Street directly opposite Petunia Avenue
- tree removal and tree trimming
