SEP 2019Intersection upgrade complete

The major upgrade to install traffic lights and provide additional turning lanes at the Lanyon and Tompsitt drives intersection in Jerrabomberra is complete.

The Australian and NSW governments jointly funded the $12 million project to improve safety, traffic flow and efficiency at the intersection.

These upgrade improvements will cater for future increases in traffic volumes and pedestrian movements.

Work on the upgrade started in June 2018 and was completed on time and on budget.

Additional line marking, including audio tactile line marking, was installed to assist and inform motorists to stay in their lane when turning at the intersection.

Roads and Maritime will continue to monitor traffic conditions and traffic lights will be adjusted if required.

Roads and Maritime thank the community for their patience during the construction of this project.

Project information

The intersection of Tompsitt Drive and Lanyon Drive in Jerrabomberra is located on one of the major access routes into the Australian Capital Territory.

This intersection features a roundabout with dual lanes on each approach and a left slip lane on the west bound approach. The intersection is currently performing poorly with motorists experiencing traffic delays and queuing, particularly during peak times.

The upgrade at this intersection involves replacing the existing roundabout with traffic lights to reduce congestion for motorists who travel through it during peak times. The upgrade will also provide better facilities for pedestrians and cyclists.

Guideline ACT has been appointed to build the new intersection.

  • Reduce the significant queuing being experienced by motorists during peak times
  • Reduce traffic delays for motorists travelling through the intersection during peak times
  • Improved road safety for all vehicles
  • Improved amenity for pedestrians and cyclists
  • Provides for future traffic growth.
