OCT 2020Traffic accident

On Wednesday 30 September a heavy vehicle attempted to cross the bridge causing damage to guardrails and the height restriction structure. Following emergency repairs the bridge reopened the following week, however some work is still required and will be done as part of Stage 1 of the upgrade.

Project information

The upgrade will improve longevity and reduce future maintenance costs for this historically significant bridge.

Work to upgrade the bridge will be done in two stages:

  • Stage 1 involves bracing the bridge and replacing the timber top chords that support the bridge and will require three months of temporary closures
  • Stage 2 involves replacing the timber support truces that hold up the bridge and will require a full closure of the bridge for up to four months, which will occur following the bushfire season in 2021.

Work for Stage 1 will start from Monday 19 October, weather permitting. The temporary closures will occur during the day between 7am and 5pm, Monday to Friday.

Between November and December up to 17 days of 24 hour closures and night work will be required to install temporary supports and remove and replace the top supports. Updates will be provided closer to the planned dates.

In the event of an emergency requiring the bridge to be used as an evacuation route, work will stop and the bridge will be reopened to vehicle traffic.

During the temporary closures traffic will be detoured via Menangle Street, Colden Street, Margaret Street, Old Hume Highway and Argyle Street. This detour will avoid school zones and help provide a smoother trip through the town centre. Please keep to the speed limits and follow signs and traffic controllers’ directions. For the latest traffic updates, you can call 132 701, visit livetraffic.com or download the Live Traffic NSW App.

Access will be maintained for residents on Prince Street and pedestrian access across the bridge will be maintained during the work.
