The upgrades will involve the delivery of two overtaking lanes, one northbound and one southbound, north of Gilgandra.
Initial work on these overtaking lanes started in March 2019 and included establishing a site compound, installation of fencing and tree removal.
Throughout July, work will continue including drainage works, tree removal, earthwork and excavation work. Work will take about eight months to complete.
Roads and Maritime Services selected BMD and AECOM as strategic partners in the Newell Highway Program Alliance.
The partnership will deliver at least 30 additional overtaking lanes in an estimated four years rather than the likely eight years it would take to fund and deliver this work using traditional procurement methods.
This innovative mode of delivery will result in a minimum of 45 kilometres of new overtaking lanes to improve safety, reduce travel times, allow more accurate travel planning and improve freight productivity.
The new overtaking lanes are expected to provide around 25 minutes of travel time savings along the length of the Newell Highway from the Victorian border to the Queensland border.
As part of this program, work on the first overtaking lanes at Dustys Creek started in March 2019.
The new upgrade will involve the delivery of two overtaking lanes, one northbound and one southbound, north of Gilgandra.
The benefits of the project include:
- Improved safety for motorists and road users
- Reduced travel times
- More accurate travel planning
- Improved freight efficiency
During construction, motorists and road users are encouraged to drive to the conditions and follow the direction of traffic control and all signs, including a reduced speed limit of 40km/h during work hours and traffic control.
