Tags and passes
How to get an electronic tag or pass for use on Sydney’s toll roads.
All of Sydney’s toll roads are fully cashless, which means you need an electronic tag or pass to pay the toll.
A range of tag and pass products are available through different providers. Each provider may apply different charges, deposits and top-up amounts, on top of the actual toll charges.
An electronic toll tag is a device that you place in your vehicle, which is read as you pass through toll points – you should hear a beep.
Tags are the easiest way to pay tolls, and are cost efficient, even if you only travel on toll roads occasionally.
Tag providers generally ask you pay a security deposit, and a pre-paid toll balance. You also nominate a top-up amount, which is charged when the toll balance drops below a certain amount. Top-ups are made from your nominated credit card or bank account.
All tags issued in Australia work on all toll roads throughout the country. So for example you can use a tag issued in NSW when driving on toll roads in Queensland or Victoria.
Toll passes are a temporary toll payment arrangement. Your number plate is recorded in the tolling systems, and then read and matched by a camera as you pass through toll points.
If you are visiting Sydney, or use toll roads very rarely, this may be a better option for you than a tag. However, you will be charged a video matching fee on top of the toll for each trip on a toll road.
You only need one pass to cover you on all of Sydney’s toll roads and motorways.
Generally, passes are only valid for the state they’re issued in, so cannot be used interstate. Linkt is the only provider that issues passes valid in all states.
Roads and Maritime E-Toll issues quarterly electronic passes for motorcyclists, for use on the Sydney Harbour Bridge and Sydney Harbour Tunnel only.

Keep your account up to date
It’s important to keep your tag account up to date – including your vehicle details. If you don’t, you may not be able to pay your tolls. You may even be charged for someone else’s tolls.
Like any other product, your electronic tag provider can only operate on the information you provide to them.
- You sell or buy a vehicle
- You change the number plate on your vehicle
- Your linked credit card or bank account details change, including expiry dates
- You lose your tag, or you need to report that it’s been stolen
- You change your name, address, email or phone number.
Why don’t you tell my tag provider I’ve sold my car?
To protect your privacy, and for legislative reasons, Roads and Maritime is not able to share change of vehicle ownership information with electronic tag providers.
It is your responsibility to let your provider know that something has changed with your account.
What can happen if I don’t update my account?
If you’ve sold your vehicle and don’t remove it from your tag account, you may be charged for the new owner’s tolls.
If you don’t update your contact details, you may not receive important correspondence about your account.
What happens if I use a toll road without a tag or pass?
If you don’t make an arrangement to pay within 3 days of the trip, the toll road operator will issue a toll notice to the registered operator of the vehicle. The toll notice requests the toll charge plus an administration fee.
More information about toll notices.
What do the different beeps mean?
As you travel through a toll point, your tag should make a beeping noise to let you know that the toll has been recorded.
Different tags make different noises, so you should get to know the sounds your tag makes.
If your tag does not beep, there may be a problem with it. Contact your toll provider for more information.
