Lower taxed vehicles

Vehicles with low emissions or wheelchair modifications can get a concession on motor vehicle tax. Commonwealth carers are eligible for a vehicle tax refund.

Hybrid and electric vehicles

Electric vehicles and some low emission petrol-electric hybrid vehicles receive a concession on motor vehicle tax. The discount is automatically applied when you register your car.

To be eligible for the concession, vehicles must be:

  • a manufacturer designated petrol-electric hybrid, diesel-electric hybrid, plug-in hybrid, or electric vehicle
  • have carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions no higher than 150 grams/kilometre (g/km) in the ‘combined’ driving cycle.

Vehicles that were awarded a 4½ or 5 star rating under the previous Green Vehicle Guide will continue to be eligible for lower tax.

Vehicles modified for wheelchair transport

If you're the registered operator of a vehicle that is only used privately and has been modified to transport wheelchairs, you may be eligible for lower tax.

To apply, you need to go to a service centre in person and provide:

Commonwealth carers

If you receive a Commonwealth Carer Payment or Carer Allowance from Centrelink, you may be eligible for a lower tax rate. You can claim this on 1 vehicle if you're an eligible carer.

Hand in the Carer registration concession declaration when you go to a service centre to renew your registration, or post it to the address on the form. The reimbursement is mailed out as a cheque.
